  The Tennis Palace

The Tennis Palace was built in 1937. A year later the arched tennis halls were added, because Helsinki was awarded the right to hold the Olympic Games in 1940. However, the Games were postponed until 1952, because of the war. The decayed building with its flea markets and bargain stores underwent a complete makeover and was reopened in 1999. It is now a lively cultural centre with museums, cinemas, coffee shops etc. The structure of the Tennis Palace still looks much as it did in the '30s -- largely as a result of the lack of interest and investment in the building.
