  A Town in the City

Suomenlinna lies just offshore from the South Harbour market place in Helsinki. It was built to be a sentinel of the Northern Baltic Sea. As well as being a sea fortress, Suomenlinna has always been a home to many people. During its most intensive construction there were several thousands of people living there. It has its own church (from 1854) and small brewery. For a long time, Suomelinna had an even larger population than Helsinki. Today, this sea fort island is still home for approximately 900 inhabitants, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
