| Carl Gustaf Mannerheim
(1867-1951)
Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, Finland's greatest military commander, received officer training both in Finland and in Russia. He was a Lieutenant-General of the White Army in the Finnish civil war in 1918, and appointed as Regent of Finland 1918-1919. In the Second World War, Mannerheim was Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish army. After the war, he was elected President of the Republic (1944-46). Mannerheim was a popular Commander-in-Chief and considered good company. He appreciated fine food and knew more about it than many of his chefs. His culinary taste was broad and often he liked to plan the menu for his guests himself.
