| Albert Edelfelt (1854-1905)
Albert Edelfelt lived and worked in Paris between 1874 and 1905 and he is regarded as the most "French" painter in Finland. Even the French themselves did not always know into which category to put him (Finnish or French.) Edelfelt depicted
the beautiful women of Paris, les petit femmes and la Parisienne. He painted commissioned portraits, which include members of the European royal families, for example Czar Nicholas II -- exceptionally, the Czar himself posed for the artist. Edelfelt's works include Finnish themes, too. He is famous for his illustrations for J.L. Runeberg's The Tales of Ensign Stål.
