| Alvar Aalto (1898-1976)
Alvar Aalto is one of the best-known Finnish architects. His vision was to create functional architecture where the building was an artistic entity.
Aalto's work can be seen both in public and private spheres. His works include Finlandia Hall, Jyväskylä University campus, Paimio hospital and the workers residential area of Sunila. He and his wife, Aino Aalto, together designed interiors and furniture. Aalto's design is characterised by its wave-like form -- which, interestingly enough, is reflected in his name: aalto means a wave.
